Vaccinations

We headed back to the doctor today for Colin's first round of vaccinations. Mike and I did a lot of research to figure out what schedule we were comfortable- we both feel that we wanted to spread out the vaccinations; 6 vacs in one day is a bit much, especially for a kid that's only 10 pounds. This research, as it turns out, was all in vain.

I walked into the office feeling comfortable with our choices and was completely thrown off course when the nurse told me that I can no longer get the vacs I wanted unless I was willing to give him other ones at the same time. You see, pharmaceutical companies now only make 3-packs for various vaccinations. Today I wanted him to get DTap and Rotavirus and NOTHING ELSE. The DTap is now only available with the Polio and HIB vaccines. Mike and I didn't think that Colin needed Polio since he doesn't live in Asia and won't be traveling there any time soon. We wanted him to have HIB next month with one more vaccination but they can't be separated. Needless to say, I was really frustrated and left the office feeling like I have no control over my child's health.

We ended up going with the 3 pack and he'll get rotavirus next month. I will say that Colin did great. His face turned bright red for about 30 seconds and he cried for about a minute but I've heard kids in that office who get all 6 shots (as recommended by the AMA) and they are screaming bloody murder. (I'm shaking my head in disgust.) We're going to still try to follow our alternative schedule the best we can. It's just so frustrating...

On a more positive note, Colin weighed 10lbs 5 oz this morning at the doctors so that means he has gained 5 oz in 6 days. He's pooping more frequently and is still his normal, happy self. I'm looking forward to him developing the "michelin man" tire look and thunder thighs! :)

Keep your eyes peeled for a new post Friday. We're taking Colin to the pool tomorrow night! (And it should be comical since the swim diapers come up to his armpits.)

Colin's 2-month doctors appointment

Today was Colin's 2-month doctors appointment. He only weighs 10 pounds and the doctor said he is too thin. She doesn't want to interfere with breast feeding so now we're going to give him 2 oz of formula AFTER he's breast fed 3 times a day and see if that makes a difference. To be honest, I'm somewhat relieved because I was worried he was too small myself. He's two months and still wearing NB sized clothing while other babies born at the same time are growing out of 3M!

Today was also the day that he was supposed to start getting vaccinations. Can you believe that babies are signed up for 6 vaccinations the first time? Mike and I are uncomfortable with that and so we're going to research it a little more and most likely follow the Dr. Sears' Alternative Schedule for Vaccinations.

This weekend is going to be a lot of fun. On Saturday we're driving to Madison to meet baby Claire, daughter of my friend from grad school, and then on Sunday Colin will be hanging out with his Auntie Kim and Uncle Meu. He can't wait!

A little perspective on how big Colin is getting

Here's an idea about how much Colin is growing. This is him when he was obviously in his first days of life. The other picture is him at almost 8 weeks. While his legs are tucked under him in the first picture you can see that his torso and head just about cover Mike's torso.

I can't believe he'll be 2 months on Monday!

Colin's mother is a moron

For those of you waiting to find out how much Colin weighs it is with complete sadness that I report, I have no idea. Today at about 5:00 I realized that I completely forgot about Colin's 8-week doctors appointment. I couldn't remember what time I was supposed to be there today and when I went to look at the calendar, I realized it was yesterday.

Oh boy.

BATHTIME!

July 4th weekend

We headed up to the cottage for the 4th of July. Colin spent a lot of time outside- he even took a nap out there! Mom and dad are feeling very excited about Colin's passion for the outdoors. We may have to go camping this fall! As you can see, the drive home meant a nap for everyone. Morris fell asleep with his head on Colin's seat and they slept face to face. (They both have bad breath so they deserve each other.)
